Food with a purpose
Eating whole nutrient rich foods allows the body to function the way God intended. God created our body as a temple and we should treat it that way. We only get this body once, so lets treat it the best way we can. There is no such thing as a one size fits all nutrition plan. However there is a "one size fits all" plan for eating the right kinds of foods. A good rule of thumb is if you don't know how to pronounce an ingredient, it probably does not belong in your body.So stick to the foods you know because your body will know them too. Eat a diet which allows your body to stay in perfect harmony. It is important to eat the full spectrum of foods in the form of unrefined carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Each of these macro-nutrients has a specific purpose within the body. And remember, it is not about calories but rather the right foods specifically for you!
Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for the body. Depending on the form, they can provide short acting or long acting energy. Carbohydrate reserves are found in the liver and muscles in the form of glycogen and can feed the body when dietary carbohydrates are low. However, we do need them and it is best to eat them early in the day so the body can utilize them and not store them as fat. Carbohydrates also play a role in protein and fat metabolism. Since carbohydrates are the primary fuel source, they are used for energy first allowing proteins to be used for muscle and tissue repair. Carbohydrates when unrefined, provide an excellent source of fiber, which helps to strengthen the colon thus diminishing chances of intestinal problems.
Proteins are found in all tissues, muscles and structures of the body. There are two types of proteins incomplete and complete proteins which consist of all the essential amino acids (found in food) and non essential amino acids (made by the body. We need proteins for muscle and tissue repair and to also build muscle. You always want to eat good quality proteins that are natural and organic, so they are free from added hormones.
Fats are an essential part of the diet for vital brain function, hormone regulation and cell conductivity. In the nervous system fats act as a conductor helping nerve signals. Have you ever noticed good fats help you think more clearly? Many mainstream ideologies pull fats out of our diets because they feel that is what has contributed to the high cholesterol/ heart disease and obesity epidemics. However, many studies show the right kinds of fats actually help to lower cholesterol and aide in weight loss. The second important function of fats is the regulation of hormones. Cholesterol is a precurser to aldosterone which increases testosterone production. It also regulates the production of other hormones in the body. Third, fats make up the lipid membrane in cells. .The fats help the cells stick together properly. Increases in good fats have been shown to help repair the intestinal lining of our digestive track.
As you can see, these macro-nutrients each play a vital role in the body. No two people are alike, so what works for one person may not work for the next. For example you may do great with a lot of protien, where another client may do better with more vegetables. We need to figure out the correct nutrient profile for you so you can feel and look your best.

Supplementation
We apply the same principle to supplements as we do food. If you do not understand what the ingredients are, it should not be in your body. We focus on supplements that help you to better absorb the nutrients, minerals and a good quality food source vitamin. We also use supplements to help build and repair muscle and tissue. Supplements are meant to be used in addition to food not in place of food.
We often get clients who have been put on vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids etc to help them feel better or raise vitamin and mineral levels in their bodies to normal range, yet they are still feeling ill. When these clients come to us still sick and wanting to feel better, we explain why they are still malnurished. When addressing the issue, the first question we ask, "Why is my body not absorbing these nutrients?" We often find they have had no change in nutrition, they use supplements with fillers, allergens, additives, which are not food source, and the client often has some sort of digestive distress. Added supplements, in this case, can cause more harm than good.
We also use supplementation for muscle building and tissue repair in the body. Being a fitness competitor and a holistic healer, it is important for us to use good quality supplements with no added fillers, stimulants or additives. We use the products that we expect our clients to use and have tested everything to see how the supplements affect us. We train hard, therefore we need a little extra push to help build good quality muscle and good supplementation to aid in the repair of our muscles and tissues. The cool thing about using good quality supplements that the body understands, is they can be used for multiple purposes therefore have double the benefit.

Digestion
Proper digestion of food and supplements is essential for all functions of the body. The better you are assimilating your nutrients the better your body can perform. You can be severely malnourished, underweight or overweight. Never think because someone is thin, they are healthy. Malnourishment is caused from digestive distress due to stress, medications( like NSAIDs and antibiotics), processed and sugary foods, and pathogens such as viruses, bacteria and parasites.
How do I correct this problem?
1.Remove any added stress and allow the body to reset by eating an anti inflammatory diet and foods that are easier to digest.
2. Take supplements to heal the digestive track and allow for better nutrient absorption.
3. Add in good quality vitamins and minerals.
4. Continue to stay on the nutrition plan that is prescribed for you for a prolonged period of time
5. After letting your body reset, we can do some nutrient manipulation as well as test allergens.

Keeping the body in Balance
There are many types of diets going around these days, Alkaline diest, juicing, vegetarian, competition diets, anti-inflammatory diets, Atkins, low- carbohydrate diet, South Beach etc... Each of these plans serves a specific purpose whether it is weight loss or ridding the body of illness. For instance, I use to be strictly vegan and actually did a 3 week juicing fast. After 2 weeks, I felt undernourished and lethargic. I started adding back good fats like avocados, coconut oil, coconut milk and then beef, chicken and fish. I felt more nourished and alive. I realized how important it is to keep the three basic macro-nutrients in my diet and also how important it is to stay balanced. You always want to eat the right balance of nutrients otherwise it will throw your body out of sync. Eating a diet full of processed foods and sugars will always throw your body into an acidic state and make you more susceptible to illness. The same can happen if all you eat is animal protein. Our bodies need to be kept in balance. Gabe and I always eat a good balance of protein, carbohydrates, leafy greens and fats. The other thing we always include are fresh green juices with lots of lemon to keep the acidity in the body regulated. Keeping the body in balance will help your body not only recover from illness quickly, but it will also aide your muscle recovery.
There are many things that can affect the nutritional balance in your body. Where you live, how you exercise, stress level, job, how you eat and what you eat all play a roll in deciding what nutrient profile suits you best. This is not guess work and should not be treated as such. You are far to valuable to play games with your life.
